Futures Literacy
Systematically building future competence.
The future is uncertain; that is the only certainty. However, everyone can learn to deal confidently with this uncertainty and strengthen their own future competence (futures literacy). What’s more, companies that establish futures literacy achieve 33% more profit and 200% more growth.
What is futures literacy?
Futures literacy is a programme developed by UNESCO. It helps people and organisations to visualise, question and develop their ideas about the future. The aim is to open up new perspectives and opportunities for action, reduce fears of uncertainty and develop confidence in proactively shaping the future.
Because we need employees and managers who are capable of dealing with the future and who dare to do so!
How do we develop future competence?
There are numerous formats for building future competence at an individual and organisational level.
The Futures Literacy Lab (FLL) is a good place to start. The lab is based on a co-design approach and adapts to your context. Participants go through four phases:
- Making assumptions visible – Which images of the future shape my thinking?
- Questioning and challenging – What are the limitations of these images?
- Letting go – Which assumptions can I consciously set aside?
- Developing new perspectives – What opportunities and questions arise from this?

- New insights that promote creativity and innovation
- Practical guidance for strategic action in uncertain times
